Before reaching out, you will likely find your answer here. Information given by the fellowship coordinator prevails over this page.

Terms & conditions

Who can apply to the Chateaubriand fellowships?

The fellowships cover Exact & Life Sciences and Humanities & Social Sciences (medical and specialization internships in French hospitals are not included). They support Israeli Ph.D. students and researchers for a 4-to-6-month research stay in France.

I would like to do a Master in France. Can I apply?

No — Master’s students are not eligible for the Chateaubriand program. (The Humanities & Social Sciences program does fund Master’s studies.)

Is there an age limit?

For PhD students, candidates should be born after 1 March 1990. For researchers, after 1 March 1985.

I am not an Israeli citizen but live in Israel. Can I apply?

No. Israeli citizenship is required.

I have French-Israeli dual citizenship. Am I eligible?

No — applicants with French-Israeli dual citizenship are not eligible for the Chateaubriand fellowships.

I am married with children. Can I apply?

Yes. However, if selected, only you receive the rights, benefits and health insurance through Campus France — your family is not covered.

Can I receive another fellowship at the same time?

Only if the other grant comes from an Israeli source (such as your Israeli university). You cannot combine it with another French or European Union funded fellowship.

I applied last year and was not selected. Can I apply again?

Yes, provided you submit all documents updated — including an invitation letter dated for the current call.

Language & preparation

I don’t speak French. Will it be a barrier?

No — speaking French is not a selection criterion. It is nonetheless preferable to learn some French before departure; it saves time and helps you prepare for your stay. French courses are available at the French Institute in Tel Aviv.

Who writes the invitation letter?

The invitation letter must be written by the French institution willing to host you.

Selection procedure

What are the selection criteria?

Excellent academic background of the candidate; scientific quality of the project; scientific quality of the host team; and the project’s interest for long-term French-Israeli scientific cooperation.

Who sits on the selection jury?

The jury is composed of Israeli and/or French university professors, chaired by the Scientific & Academic Attaché of the French Embassy.
